ABSTRACT

This study analyzes the participation of Psychology in the National System of Science, Technology and Innovation (SNCTI), placing it among the major areas of knowledge. For this purpose, it took the current panorama of research productivity fellowship (PQ) distribution at the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) as reference. It presents the distribution of PQ grants by modality and gender to discuss gender inequalities, both in the general sphere of science and within Psychology. Data was collected from the bank of active researcher(s) made available by CNPq in 2019, consisting of 12,917 PQ fellows, including all areas. All major areas of knowledge showed inequalities in access to resources for research promotion, particularly in terms of PQ quota distribution. The results also point to regional inequalities and gender asymmetries in the academic and research career reflected in the quantity and modality of the FP grant in all areas of knowledge, especially Psychology. In the set of quotas made available by CNPq, Psychology, throughout its 60 years of existence, still holds an insignificant percentage. To some extent, this scenario stems from the fact that Psychology is historically marked as a predominantly female profession, as an applied discipline and with little tradition in the scientific field and knowledge production.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Abstract The National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) provides research productivity grants (PQ) to professionals who meet certain criteria. Identifying the profile of PQ scholars from different fields of knowledge is important for the development of a broad mapping of the field and for the development of policies aimed at boosting scientific and technological development in sub-areas or specific locations. The goal of this study is to analyze the profile of CNPq PQ fellows working in Psychology, considering the three-year period concluded in 2014. The sample consisted of curricula from 338 productivity fellows working in Psychology. The data obtained from this survey indicated that six out of every 10 PQ fellows working in the field of Psychology are located on the layer 2 and that only 10 universities concentrate 56.7% of researchers awarded with PQ grants. There is still a high concentration in the Southeast, which receives 55.3% of grants and presents the highest proportion of PQ grants per inhabitants in Brazil. Fellows work mostly in public universities, mainly federal, and are mostly women. Moreover, Social Psychology, Developmental Psychology and Psychological Treatment and Prevention are the most frequent fields among researchers who receive PQ grants. The identification of regional inequalities, concentration of grants in only a few institutions and also gender disparities, for example, can contribute so that questions regarding resource distribution can be reassessed....(AU)

ABSTRACT

Traditionally, the success of a researcher is assessed by the number of publications he or she publishes in peer-reviewed, indexed, high impact journals. This essential yardstick, often referred to as the impact of a specific researcher, is assessed through the use of various metrics. While researchers may be acquainted with such matrices, many do not know how to use them to enhance their careers. In addition to these metrics, a number of other factors should be taken into consideration to objectively evaluate a scientist′s profile as a researcher and academician. Moreover, each metric has its own limitations that need to be considered when selecting an appropriate metric for evaluation. This paper provides a broad overview of the wide array of metrics currently in use in academia and research. Popular metrics are discussed and defined, including traditional metrics and article-level metrics, some of which are applied to researchers for a greater understanding of a particular concept, including varicocele that is the thematic area of this Special Issue of Asian Journal of Andrology. We recommend the combined use of quantitative and qualitative evaluation using judiciously selected metrics for a more objective assessment of scholarly output and research impact.

ABSTRACT

In this study, data regarding the population of productivity fellows from the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq), Committee of Veterinary Medicine, were evaluated by calculation of scientometrical indexes as an effort to examine the profile of researchers from different levels on these parameters. Other variables, such as the place of doctorate studies, gender, institution, and advisory of human resources were also recorded and evaluated. There is a clear predominance of men (72.37%), which are mostly settled in the South and Southeast. Most of the recipients were awarded his doctorate in Brazil. From the analyzed parameters, advisory of human resources is very high at all levels; among the scientometric variables, the citations indexes and h-index are decreasing from the highest level (PQ-1A) to level 2, yet the intragroup variation is very high for these and other derivatives of the H-index. A modification of the h-index, the AWCR index, in which the calculation takes into account the age of articles published and cited, seems more appropriate to stratify the scholarship of fellows. Studies like these could be repeated in the medium term in order to improve the ranking formulas of scholars.

Background: Details about research productivity in the infectious diseases specialty from India are lacking. Objective: To analyse publishing trends and research productivity of articles related to infectious diseases in the Journal of the Association of Physicians of India (JAPI). Materials and Methods : We carried out bibliometric analysis of articles related to infectious diseases specialty from JAPI published between 2000 and 2011. Data were derived from the journal's website and the articles were analysed for type (original article, case reports, etc.), microorganism (bacterial, viral, etc.) place of the research and timelines for publication. Results : Out of 2977 articles published in JAPI over last 12 years, 256 articles belong to infectious diseases subspecialty. Infectious diseases contributed 11-18% of the published articles per year in JAPI during the last decade. Original articles (31%), case reports (38%) and correspondence (22%) constitute the majority of article types, while remaining 9% was made up by images. Bacterial (22%), protozoal and helminthic (20%), HIV (15%) and mycobacterial (16%) diseases lead the type of microorganisms represented in the research articles. Mumbai (16%), Delhi (9%) and Kolkata (7%) are the top three places contributing to the articles, followed by Chandigarh and Chennai. Original articles and case reports took approximately 14 months for publication, as compared to 6 months for an image (P < 0.0001). Conclusion : Infectious diseases specialty contributes about 15% of articles per annum in JAPI. HIV and tuberculosis together account for 30% of published litearture with fair representation from other organisms. Mumbai and Delhi are the leading contributors towards research productivity in this specialty.

ABSTRACT

We reviewed the literature regarding Japan's contribution to research in medicine in 1991-2000. Japan contributed 7.6% of all articles in English listed in the Medline database. The contribution ranged from 0.6 to 11.4% for various clinical science fields and 3.8 to 11.9% for basic science categories of reputable journals. The lowest contributions were in the categories “General and General Internal Medicine” and “Epidemiology”, where Japan contributed only 0.6% and 1.1% of the articles, respectively. The Japanese contribution to high quality clinical research (randomized controlled trials, case-control studies, cohort studies) was meager, while that to the basic sciences was more satisfactory than to the clinical science categories. Appropriate academic and social initiatives should be made to accelerate clinical research in Japan.
